Monitored security players in North America were quick to see the potential of adding smart home services to their offerings. Smart home devices could extend and improve the value of their core services and appeal to a wider customer base. ADT, Vivint, and many others layered smart home services such as energy management on top of their security offerings. The promise of combined smart home and monitored security has even drawn AT&T into the market with its Digital Life offering. However, the technology developed to underpin these combined plays also means greater competition. Telecom and cable companies increasingly offer smart home services bundled with outsourced monitored security. While such outsourcing often supports existing players it may not always be the case. Further competition comes from increasing device and home gateway connectivity for unmonitored security services. End users can take the leading role in managing their home security at far lower price points than existing monitored security plays. Smart home plays: initially launched integrated with security services and being uncoupled from security and sold as standalone systems. Retailers and hardware vendors are entering the market with their own smart home security plays

This report examines the emerging competitive market place for monitored home security services and providers and details the strategies, technologies, and partnerships that will help define home security services in the era of the smart home.
